Bacon and Eggs Addition

I got the rare, but WONDERFUL gift of my mom babysitting my sweet kids last night (ON A SCHOOL NIGHT) and I got so much done!  I left the house before 6 this morning and on the way to school today's math lesson hit me.  I was planning to do a Minute to Win It activity with counting, but last night I made a little adding with ten frames and word problems activity page with a breakfast theme and it got me thinking......I remembered that I had some really cute felt bacon and fried eggs and some little blue plates tucked away in the file cabinet.  I rushed in and pulled them out and decided that we would work on adding with the bacon and eggs.
Aren't they so cute?!?!?
I called up two students at a time;  one to pick the pieces to put on the plate and another to draw it on a ten frame (on a white board).  They were so excited!  We did a lot of talking about how 2 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon was the same as 3 pieces of bacon and 2 eggs - BONUS!  And then after many examples we moved to the sheet that I made.
The kids worked on the word problems, filling in the ten frames, and creating equations.  I was SO IMPRESSED with their work that I actually got teary (I know, sappy sap, but it was so encouraging and amazing to watch these little minds working so hard.)  They worked diligently to finish the sheet with the opportunity to color, cut apart, and make their own plate of bacon and eggs!
They turned out so precious!!!  After they picked up to 10 breakfast items they created a sheet with their bacon and eggs in a ten frame and an equation.  I'm not posting this on Tpt yet because I want to make a lot more sheets for a packet, but if you are interested in our activity you can click HERE to get what I have so far and used today.  There is also a sheet at the end with a little extension activity that I plan to use tomorrow.
I hope that you've had fun reading about our Bacon and Egg Addition!  I'd love to hear your thoughts!  Have a great night and enjoy your BREAKFAST tomorrow!!!

AHOY Mateys!!!

For the past week we have been learning about maps.  We started the week with an anchor chart about what a map is and what you can use them for.  It was all good:  1.  You can find your way home if you are lost.  2.  You can find new places to go.  3.  You can use a park map to find the rides. (Have to say that I thought that one was pretty amazing since I never thought of that one before!!)  and then......4.  YOU CAN FOLD THEM UP AND USE THEM AS A FAN!  Bwaaahahahaha  I laughed so hard as I added it to our chart.  She said "What??!!??  You CAN!!"

Anyways, our awesome librarian (Mrs. Joni Aycock) wanted to know how she could help us out.  She does story time each week with our classes and tries really hard to enhance our curriculum.  She decided to put together a Pirate Day for us!  She came dressed for success!
She planned out 4 stations that we rotated through over the span of a couple of hours.  In my room we watched Jake and the Neverland Pirates and had goldfish and blue ocean punch...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show!!

down the hall they colored pirate MAPS and then wadded them up, dipped them in tea, and laid them out to dry...

another group followed these little signs around the building ending up in the principals office where they found a sweet "treasure"...

and then in the library Joni had them learning about maps on the Smart board!

I know as Captain of my ship I should have better attire, but this is the best I could do this week!!!
It was SUCH a fun day, especially for my little Mateys since we are all about all things PIRATE!!
I hope you enjoyed reading about our super special day!
And as always, can't wait to see what we come up with next......

How to Blow a Bubble

Last week we had a TON of fun learning HOW TO BLOW A BUBBLE with some yummy Hubba Bubble Bubble Tape.  We used the activity to write a "How-to" paper.

I gave them each almost a FOOT (yep!  the website I read said a LOT of gum) of bubble gum and had them chew and chew and chew while we watched a video on how to do it!  My little Mateys were SUPER DUPER excited about the challenge.
 My big bubble!
Working on it...
A little bit bigger...
and voila!  We have a BIG one!!!

I bought pink balloons for those who just couldn't get it.  I didn't, however, expect that they couldn't really blow a balloon either though (harder than it sounds).  They did their best though.  You can see how hard they tried!!!  Here are some of the fun pics that I caught.  Totally forgot to take pictures of their writings, but they did great on those too!!!  We did First, Next, and Last and drew pictures to go with it.  I was really proud of their work!
This little sweetie blew so hard her whole face was BEET red!!!  She didn't want to give up, but this is about the best she did!!  LOL
This little man did a great job all on his own!
He was afraid to let it go!
Until next time, go grab you some gum and try blowing bubbles of your own!!!
